Over 90% of India’s workforce of about 400 Million is estimated to be in the unorganized sector – even worse, this number is growing due to population migration to urban centers. Unorganized sector workers generally have no protection in terms of savings investments or insurance, and are engaged in a constant struggle to make ends meet on a day to day basis. |
For example, only about 0.4 percent of the unorganised sector workers were receiving social security benefits like Provident Fund in 2004-05 (See NationalCommission for Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector, Government of India. “Report on Conditions of Work and Promotion of Livelihoods in the UnorganisedSector.” New Delhi: 2008). As a result, employers take advantage of the situation by paying low wages, distancing itself from working conditions and social security, violating labor legislation and by dispensing with any workplace safety measures. |
LabourNet aims to improve livelihoods of the Unorganized workforce by engaging them in an institutional framework that encourages greater accountability.by all stakeholders to address the above stated issues. By serving as a facilitator, it provides a platform for workers and clients to find and interact with each other in a transparent and professional manner. It's primary goal is to ensure that workers are able to find stable employment; improve their skill levels, and thereby employability; and enjoy basic social protection measures. |
The effort of LabourNet is to create a sustainable virtuous cycle of broad-based wealth creation for unorganized sector workers, driven by growing customer demand, improving customer service and experience, could therefore have an enormous positive social impact as it achieves increasing scale |
