What is the overall CSR vision of Total Oil in India and how have you been fulfilling it?
Total is a global integrated energy producer and provider, a leading international oil and gas company, and the world’s second-ranked solar energy operator. We are present in India since 1993 and have rising and dynamic presence on oil and gas sector. We are committed to better energy that is safer, cleaner, more efficient, more innovative and accessible to as many people as possible.
Total is committed to being the company whose actions inspire confidence in a responsible, sustainable energy future, by meeting the growing demand from its customers and driving continuous improvement in its operations.
Our philosophy is to conduct business in a way that benefits as many people as possible. To ensure that our activities have positive impact for society as a whole, including local economies and communities, we are involved in a number of projects, alongside partners with recognized skills and expertise such as institutions, and NGOs specializing in education or micro finance and others.
In the area of employability, do you see synergies between your business purpose fulfillment and social responsibilities?
One of the key pillars of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy is skill development so as to generate more employable manpower. We believe that in today’s age of globalization and technical volatility, skill building is an important instrument to increase the efficacy and quality of manpower for improved productivity and economic growth. Skill development is a powerful tool to empower youth and improve their social acceptance and stature.
Skill development has a great synergy with our business objectives too. As a dynamic player in the oil and gas industry, we always strive to build a pool of talented individuals who can contribute to our business ambitions of making our mark in the business world. We believe in shaping up individuals to become highly competent professionals in their respective work areas and offer them career opportunities not only in India but also internationally.
In line with TOTAL Group’s Sustainable Development Policy, we at Total India contribute and support the local communities by playing a role of streamlining the impact of our activities and production for the benefit of the people and the environment and contributing to the economic and social development of stakeholders.
What has been Total Oil’s contribution in enabling livelihoods of the socially underprivileged sector?
In the past, we at Total India regularly undertook small CSR projects across various geographies to support local communities on rainwater harvesting, development of education, provision of medical aid and improving road safety. The recent laws enacted under Companies Act 2013 have resulted in a review of our CSR policy. We have adopted a new approach where emphasis will be given to larger projects focused on social development through skills development.
The objective is to empower them to effectively participate in unfolding social and economic opportunities so that they can be an integral part of the mainstream of growth and development. We believe that such initiatives would contribute significantly to the overall welfare of the community and make a difference in living standards of the community.
With the vision of enabling a sustainable and professional livelihood to unemployed youth of the society, we engaged Sambhav Foundation, a leading NGO, to undertake a CSR project to train deserving and needy candidates as motor mechanics.Unemployed and underprivileged youth within the age group of 16 to 20 years are trained as 2 & 3 wheeler mechanics. The project was launched in 2016 from four cities viz. Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi and Pune.
In the field of sports, we have partnered with Dilip Vengsarkar Cricket Academy, an institution committed to mentoring young aspiring cricketers and readying them to take on as future leaders of cricket representing India on a global platform. With this initiative, we have embarked on a new journey of unleashing hidden talent of Indian youth and helping them meet their aspirations of making a mark in the game of professional cricket. The partnership entails support for the academy to create the requisite infrastructure and also provide best coaching facilities.
How do you perceive your partnership with LabourNet and what difference has it brought to the beneficiaries?
LabourNet has been a valuable partner of Total India since it is the implementing partner for Sambhav Foundation. In the mechanic training schools, training is conducted through LabourNet. We are of the opinion that LabourNet is a valued skilling and impact organization that has made a difference to the lives of thousands of students and workers in the formal and informal sectors through work-integrated vocational education. We hold this partnership in great esteem.
Total India is committed to the cause of skill development of Indian youth and will continue with many initiatives in this direction in the near future. We believe that LabourNet will be our partner and provide assistance in all our future endeavors.
