Divya Rai, a determined girl from Gangtok always had zeal towards beauty care and wellness and wanted to make a career as a beautician. She always wished to work in big cities and support her family economically.
Coming from a low middle class family, 21 year old Divya stayed with her parents in Gangtok. After completion of 12th grade in commerce stream, Divya didn’t have much interest in studies and wanted to pursue beautician course. Hence she joined Sambhav Foundation, a LabourNet’s initiative in Gangtok on reference from one of her friends.
Divya was very hard working girl and learnt the teachings very enthusiastically. She got training in beauty care, make-up, hair styling, facials and many others and found the trainers to be very knowledgeable and also supportive. Divya believes that the hands-on experience given by the trainers in performing hair styling, make-up, facials added confidence in them, as they not only got the theoretical knowledge but also the practical knowledge of each tasks in beauty care and make-up.
On completion of 2 months training in Sambhav foundation, Divya got an opportunity to do her internship in Pragati beauty parlour in Gangtok. Eventually she also got placed in the same Beauty parlour after her internship since was very good and punctual at her work. While working in Pragati beauty parlour, Divya got a work opportunity from Mumbai. Divya grabbed the opportunity as she wanted to work in big cities and also felt it give her a good exposure and learning in beautician field. She was offered a salary of Rs. 20,000 per month. Divya moved to Mumbai and worked in that parlour for a year.
Later, Divya got an offer to work with a renowned beauty salon ‘Shiva’s Signature Beauty Salon’ in Mumbai. She started working there with initial salary of Rs. 22,000 per month and learnt a lot of tricks and techniques in beauty business. Her training in Sambhav foundation both in beauty care and hair care and inter-personnel skills helped her to work efficiently. She eventually got promoted from a trainee to a senior beautician role in a span of 2 years and now draws a salary of Rs.30,000 per month.
Divya has become financially independent and supports her parents financially and leads a satisfied life. She says that everyday is a learning day to her and she is now learning advanced beauty course in the same parlour from her seniors. She aspires to learn more and more to gain overall knowledge to be the best beautician. She also wants to keep updated with the latest techniques in beauty care so that she can work more efficiently and provide best and satisfied services to customers.
She says that though she comes from a small place, it was her determination and support from Sambhav foundation, which helped her to achieve what she always wished for.
